Background information:

Nathan^6 Scribner (Helena^5 (Van Wicklen) Scribner, Paulus^4 Van Wicklen, Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. 5 May 1793; NY and d. Armada, Michigan. He married Mary M. Sumner (b. abt 1801 Vermont and d. before 1864, Armada, MI) abt 1821. He married second to Sara White (b. abt 1814, Columbus) on 17 August 1864, Port Huron, MI. Nathan's father is presumably deceased by 1800 when his mother, Helena relocates the family from New York to Upper Canada. (On the 1842 Westminster, Ontario, CAN census, Nathan Scribner indicates that he has been in Canada for 42 years.) In 1803, Nathan is a child in the household of widow (Helena) Scribner in Cramahe Township. By 1805 the Scribner family had moved to Percy Township. Nathan's mother, Helena, remarries in 1811 to Thomas Vardey, but is predeceased a second time by 1815. Nathan is no longer on the Percy census by 1816 and appears to have removed to Westminster Township, Ontario, CAN by 1817. A Sumner family petitioned for land in July of 1817 and it is most likely that this is the family of Mary M. Sumner, Nathan's future wife. They get married before 1820. There is some discrepancy concerning the precise number and names of Nathan and Mary's children. Frederick C. Montney [see source section below] has one listing, and Glenna Jamieson's research [much of which is presented on this page] suggests some alterations to that list. Further research will likely increase the accuracy of this listing of Scribner children.

Children: Sylvania^7 Scribner, b. abt 1819, Canada. She married Francis Frank of Westminster Twp. on 15 September 1838, Westminster Twp.; Solomon^7 Scribner, b. abt 1821, Canada. He married Ursala D. Tibbets, 20 December 1843 and they had four children (all b. Michigan) by the time of the 1860 Census: William^8 E. Scribner (b. abt 1846), Solomon^8 L. Scribner (b. abt 1848), Polly^8 J. Scribner (b. abt 1852), and Elisha^8 S. Scribner (b. abt 1854); Sullivan ^7 Scribner, b. abt 1822, Canada. He married Rosella _____ (b. abt 1827, Can) and they had three children b. in Michigan: Ezra^8 (b. abt 1845), Lafayette^8 (b. abt 1848) and Francis^8 (b. abt 1850); Friendly^7 Scribner, b. abt 1825, Canada. She married Jonathan Tibbits (b. abt. 1821, CAN) on 20 June 1843, Westminster Twp. 1850 Armada, MI census shows three children: Lyman^8 Tibbits (b. abt. 1844), Melissa^8 Tibbits (b. abt 1846), Alonzo^8 Tibbits (b. abt 1847); Thaddeus^7 Scribner, b. abt 1827, Canada; Mary^7 M. Scribner, b. abt 1831, Canada; Sarah^7 Jane Scribner, b. abt 1833, Canada; Joseph^7 L. Scribner, b. abt 1835, Canada;  Francis^7 W. Scribner, b. abt 1839, Canada

Montney genealogy (for Nathan Scribner and family) http://www.montney.com/relatives/index.htm

Frederick C. Montney III has an extensive genealogical site (see source section below) that provides vital statistics on Nathan Scribner and his family. Nathan Scribner was b. 5 May 1793 New York and d. Armada, MI. He married Mary M. Sumner (b. abt 1800 Vermont and d. Armada, MI) abt 1821. They had eight children: Solomon Scribner (b. 1822, Canada, d. Armada, MI); Thadeus Scribner (b. 1827, Can; d. 28 Apr 1879, Berville, MI); John Scribner (b. abt 1829, CAN); Mary M. Scribner (b. 1831, CAN); Sarah Jane Scribner (b. 1833, CAN); Desdamona Scribner (b. 14 Jan 1833, CAN and d. abt 1915, Armada, MI); Joseph Scribner (b. 1836, CAN), and Francis W. Nathan Scribner (It appears that he is the Proprietor although he never got the patent for the property;
6 born in Canada of British origin and 2 in the U.S.
Nathan has lived in province for 42 years
1 male 5 years of age and under
no females 5 and under
2 males over 5 and under 14 years of age
2 females over 5 and under 14
crossed out 1 male single 21 not 30
1 male 30 not 60 married
1 female 14 not 45 married
1 female 14 not 45 single
Total of 8 in family

The information for 1842 appears consistent with that reported for 1842 except one of the males over 16 in 1840 has left the household and that would be the male 21 not 30 crossed out who was likely Solomon. There were 3 males under 16 in 1840 and there is the 1 male under 5 and the 2 males 5 to 14 in 1842. There were 2 females under 16 in 1840 and there are 2 females 5 to 15 in 1842. One of those was likely Friendly Scribner who was born abt. 1825. One of the two males over 16 in 1840 would be Nathan Scribner and he would be the male 30 not 60 married in 1842. The 2 females over 16 would be the female 14.

By way of further illustration:
1842 Census
1 male 5 years of age and under: Francis, b. abt 1840
2 males in the family above 5 and under 14: Thaddeus b. abt 1827 and Joseph L. b. abt 1835
2 females above age 5 and under 14 years of age: Mary M. b. abt 1831 and Sarah b. abt 1833
1 male single 21 not 30 crossed out? (Probably Solomon, b. abt 1822)
1 male 30 not 60 married: Nathan Scribner, b. 1793
1 female 14 not 45 married: Mrs. Mary M. (Sumner) Scribner, b. abt 1800
Sullivan and Solomon must have left home. They might have gone to work in the woods in Michigan. Sullivan had a child born in Michigan abt. 1845 and he had probably been there earlier. Sylvania was married by 1838 and was not in the household.
